The word debate implies conflict. Yes, I’ve spoken about debating my Republican opponent, Ann Wagner, but a much more appealing option is the kind of forum that the League of Women Voters sponsors. Fortunately for the citizens of Missouri’s Second Congressional District, the league has arranged a forum on the evening of Wednesday, October 22. Libertarian Bill Slantz and I have eagerly accepted, but Ms. Wagner’s campaign has neither accepted any of the dates proposed by the League nor offered any of their own.
Citizens want there to be fair discussion of the issues in a non-partisan setting. The League provides us with that. Citizens want to reduce the acrimony among members of Congress. When I ran in 2010, even Todd Akin met with me three times. For whatever reason, at the three-day Greentree Festival last month in Kirkwood, Ms. Wagner repeatedly did not accept my invitation …… just to meet.
I’m not scary. I’m not threatening. I think that individuals (not corporations) running for office should get to know a little about one another and do their best to make the choices easier for the electorate. I cannot think of a better time for me to meet Ms. Wagner than at the League of Women Voters Forum on Wed., October 22. It is at Student Center of Meramec Community College at 1333 Big Bend Rd, St Louis, MO 63122 (map). The actual forum is in the Multipurpose Room. It begins at 7:00 PM and runs until 8:30 PM.
I hope that you will attend and that you can bring friends as well. Equally importantly, I hope that you will contact Ms. Wagner’s campaign office at (314) 952-4266. You can also contact members of the media to inform them of Ms. Wagner’s apparent refusal to accept the League’s gracious invitation.
